Introduction Sexual abuse is, to put in Florence Rush's words, "The best kept secret." Although there has been research since the 1920s and that this research consistently documented high rates of sexual abuse, the information was systematically denied by professionals, and even less 22222 made of an 'appropriate theory' to explain adult women's complaints of childhood sexual abuse. They were the victims, not of sex criminals, but of Oedipal fantasies (Masson, 1984).
