Introduction
Sexual abuse is, to put in Florence Rush's words, "The best kept secret." Although there has
been research since the 1920s and that this research consistently documented high rates of
sexual abuse, the information was systematically denied by professionals, and even less 22222
made of an 'appropriate theory' to explain adult women's complaints of childhood sexual
abuse. They were the victims, not of sex criminals, but of Oedipal fantasies (Masson, 1984).
All these adults and children who were known to be victims of sexual violence usually saw
themselves blamed for the crime. Abraham wrote in 1927:
“Especially female hysterics are constantly on the lookout for adventures. They are raped in
public places, fall victim to unimaginable horrific sex acts, etc. It is part of their nature to
constantly expose themselves to external traumatic influences. In them there is an
inexplicable need to constantly become the object of external violence. Here we recognize
the general psychological characteristics of women, but in an exaggerated form.”
